This online course module covers the events leading up to the American Civil War, the war itself, and the effects of the war. This module is meant work in conjunction with our in-class instruction/activities and will be taking a blended approach. Overall, these lessons will span approximately 4 weeks and will cover the bulk of Period 5 according to the AP College Board’s US History curriculum.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to understand, identify, and explain the causes of the American Civil War.
- Students will be able to identify and explain the main actions of the American Civil War through the examination and analysis of maps, charts, photographs, and sources (primary & secondary).
- Students will be able to understand, identify, and explain the effects of the American Civil War.

How does this unit fit into our class?
This unit is a blended unit, which means that work on this unit will be done both online and in the classroom. However, if necessary, I have designed this unit to work completely online. The majority of the work that you will be tasked with in this unit, either online or in-class, is provided for you within this online unit module. ALL audio and/or visual activities in this unit will either need to be completed while at home or in class during a work period. The in-class portion of this unit will mainly be focused on the examination of the primary and secondary sources related to the lessons of the unit, small-group lesson specific skill-based activities, discussions of lesson specific issues/documents or the extension/review of the unit's online discussions, and/or work time on the assessments located in the unit, both the lesson assessments and the final unit assessment.
Required Text
The only required text for this unit that is not located within this module or will be provided by me in the classroom is the course textbook: The American Pageant, 16th Edition by David M Kennedy & Lizabeth Cohen (2016)
Technology Requirements
All students will have access to a Chromebook from the classroom’s computer cart while in class. However you not be able to take these out of the classroom and to be successful in this module as it will be carried out mostly online, you will need access to the following technology:
- Computer with Internet access and audio/video capabilities
- Internet connection that can play videos
- Access to Google Drive
Grading Policy
Your work in the online course module will be combined with your work/participation in the classroom. All grades will be combined together for a complete unit grade.
For this unit, you will be assessed and evaluated on the following criteria:
